    Thermal Conductivity of Corrugated Flute

A Thermal Conductivity Test was performed on three different flute profiles (B, C, and E) to
determine which flute provides the best insulation. A temperature reading was taken on
each board before the heating process began (beginning temp). A hot plate was heated to
270°F. Each sample was placed on the hot plate. The time (in seconds) was recorded
when the heat passing through the combined board reached the specified temperature.

The test results are as follows:

Thermal Conductivity
(seconds)

C-Flute Avg. B-Flute Avg. E-Flute Avg.
Beginning Temp. 77.5 78.3 77.5
100 Deg. F. 7.1 4.5 4.1
125 Deg. F. 14.8 11.3 7.7
150 Deg. F. 72.4 18.1 14.1
175 Deg. F. 140.6 85.1 35.1
200 Deg. F. 321.0 171.4 67.0

Test results show that the board with the highest caliper is the best insulator, keeping in
mind that air is a very poor thermoconductor. Based on the data, the C-flute profile would
    provide the best insulation.

The results above show the differences between each flute profile at each temperature
level. To see this information charted, click here.
